Sexuality, interracial relationships, gender roles and challenges of identity were explored in honor of Pride Week in “The Miscegenations Project,” presented Wednesday night in Heritage Hall.

The idea of miscegenation –– the marriage, cohabitation, or sexual intercourse between a white person and a member of another race –– was a focal point in the presentation by authors Lea Robinson and Elizabeth Whitney.

In a video presentation with accompanying narration, Robinson and Whitney spoke about the challenges they face not only in regards to their same-sex marriage, but as an interracial couple.

Robinson, the assistant director for the Office of Multicultural Affairs and manager of LGBTQ Advising and Programming at Columbia University, said because of glares and comments they endure when using public transportation, a simple commute will often leave the couple feeling judged, exposed and angry.

“It definitely takes courage to move through public spaces together,” she said.
